Breckenridge Ski Resort closes this Sunday as new REI readies to open in Dillon

By Caitlin Row | Wednesday, April 12, 2017

The end of Summit County's primary ski and ride season is drawing near. Breckenridge Ski Resort is closing Sunday, April 23, leaving Arapahoe Basin Ski Area as the last remaining spot to make turns in the county. Keystone and Copper closed their mountains last weekend.

At the time of this writing, snow showers are on the books for Friday and Saturday, with partly sunny conditions predicted for Sunday. Temperatures will hover in the 40s and 50s. Let's hope fresh snow blankets Breck for closing weekend. That would make for a wonderful Sunday on the slopes.

As part of Breck's closing day, the resort will host Breck Plunge pond skim at the base of Peak 8. Live music, food and beverages will be part of the fun.

And with that in mind, here are more top picks at Summit This Week.

A-Basin Beach Days

Checking out A-Basin's terrain status, it appears that everything on the front side is open with only East Wall Hiking Areas closed for the season.

The first of the ski area's Shakin' at the Basin Spring Concert Series begins on Saturday, April 29. Those events will continue on Saturdays through June 3, with a Sunday concert planned for June 4. Bands like White Water Ramble, Mama Magnolia, Jakarta and The Sweet Lilies are set to perform.

A-Basin's Swimwear Day is set for Saturday, May 20. Its Spring Rail Jam is Sunday, May 28.

This is prime "beach time" in Summit County, where locals and visitors alike cook out in the parking lot between making runs up top. It's a not-to-be-missed party all springtime long.

I'll be there. Hope to see y'all enjoying yourselves!

REI Coming to Town

Now here's some good news. Dillon is getting its own REI and the grand opening is scheduled for May 5-7. Doors will open to the public Friday and Saturday, May 5-6 at 9 a.m. and on Sunday, May 7, at 10 a.m. For those who are familiar, the shop is located near City Market in the shopping center by the movie theater.

REI isn't just a recreation-focused retail shop. It also offers REI Outdoor School classes, local activities and more. Check out women's backpacking and camping basics class descriptions here. Other services include professional bike and ski shop services. This shop is a great addition to Summit County offerings, and I'll certainly be checking it out after it opens.

More Things to Do This Week

OffSteady is set to perform this Friday, April 21, at The Historic Brown in Breckenridge. Other events on tap include a Dave Connelly Double Header at The Motherloaded Tavern in Breckenridge on Saturday, April 22; Earth Day at Breckenridge's Broken Compass Brewing taproom, also on Saturday, along with an Earth Day pub crawl and town clean-up (see the daytime calendar for details); Stoney Live at Motherloaded on Sunday, April 23 (the restaurant will close for the off season after that); and Acoustic Sunday at Broken Compass Brewing, also on (you guessed it) Sunday.

A-Basin will host its own Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 22, in partnership with Protect Our Winters. This includes a fun end-of-day party and prizes.
