It’s here! Summer is peeking its sunny head out from the spring clouds, and the first week of June is jam-packed with family fun outside. Whether you’re in the mood to dance, eat, fish, hike, bike, stroll through town, run, ride horses or boat — or maybe a little bit of everything — Summit County is kicking off June with a taste of all the parts of summer we love most. Set the tone for the season and take advantage of all the free, fun and community events happening around the county.

Wave: Light + Water + Sound Festival

Enjoy BreakCreate's free, four-day festival of innovative art while taking part in the array of activities surrounding the show. Interactive art, including installations, musical performances, workshops, talks, films, outdoor canvasses, exhibitions and more involving light, water and sound will take over the Blue River Plaza from Thursday, June 1, through Sunday, June 4. Silverthorne’s Start to Summer 

Saturday, June 3, it’s time to brush off your fishing skills at the Silverthorne Kids Fishing Derby. Bring you poles and bait to Trent Park from 9-11 a.m. Participants will have the chance to win fun door prizes while waiting for the fish to bite!

Who knew safety could be so fun? From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 3, families can come to Rainbow Park for the Safe Summer Kick Off to meet and learn from all of the different departments and organizations that keep Summit County safe, including the fire and police departments, the sheriff’s office, state patrol, Colorado Parks and Wildlife and more. The event will include a bounce house, a BBQ lunch, helmet adjusting and decorating, rescue demos and awesome giveaways.

National Trails Day

Saturday, June 3, is National Trails Day. This year Friends of the Dillon Ranger District are focusing on the Salt Lick trail system in Wildernest. Volunteers are meeting at the Salt Lick trailhead at 9 a.m. Pug Ryan's will provide BBQ and beer for all participants following the cleanup. Sign up to volunteer.

Horsing Around Family Fun Day

Horse around for a good cause from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Breckenridge Equestrian Center on Saturday, June 3, to raise money for the Far View Horse Rescue Organization. The family fun day will include a bounce castle, games and crafts, gymkhana, music by DJ Craig, a silent auction, $5 pony rides and an $8 Western BBQ meal. A Kids Fun Pack for $10 includes access to the castle, games and a craft.

Frisco’s Rock the Dock Party

Welcome summer by the water at the Frisco Rock the Dock Party on Saturday, June 3. From 8-11 a.m. Frisco Rowing Center is hosting free lessons and demos in celebration of National Learn to Row Day. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the marina there will be free live music by Lola Rising. The Island Grill is offering a $6 burger and beer deal.

Vertical Runner Crawfish Boil

Get a taste of Louisiana without having to leave Summit County at the Vertical Runner Crawfish Boil. Saturday, June 3, at 3 p.m, come enjoy good food, beer and live music on the back patio. All proceeds will go toward the Team Vertical Breckenridge’s adults and kids teams. Reserve tickets through Vertical Runner by calling (970) 423-6116. Advanced tickets cost $25, and tickets the day of will be $35.

Run the Rockies

It’s time to hit the pavement and breathe deep at altitude. Kick off race season with the 41stRun the Rockies, a classic early season mountain race. On Saturday, June 3, choose between a 10K or a half marathon and enjoy a run along the Ten Mile Range on the recreational path. Starting at Copper Mountain, feel the wind in your face as you run down lots of hills to Main Street in Frisco. A post-race celebration will include food, local beer and an awards ceremony. One last weekend of Shakin’ at the Basin 

All good things come to an end, and this weekend marks the last two performances of the Shakin’ at the Basin Concert Series. On Saturday, June 3, Jakarta, an old-school funk and R & B band will play, and on Sunday, June 4, The Sweet Lilies, a high-energy band, will play in the Base Area.

Cycle Silverthorne Month

June is Cycle Silverthorne Month, meaning each week we will have a few fun events to get you rolling. Brush up on your mountain bike knowledge at the Mountain Bike Fundamentals clinic on Tuesday, June 6 from 5-7 p.m. The workshop will cover the foundations of techniques and progressions for mountain biking. Participants must come with their own mountain bikes, helmets and closed-toed shoes. Contact Silverthorne Rec Center to register at (970) 262-7370.
