A Week for the Arts and Outdoors in Summit County

Among the biking and running events that seem to fill our summer schedules, Summit County is bringing us a week full of art. Whether you're in the mood to watch, dance, sing, pretend or create, there is an event to quench your creative thirst. If your wallet has taken a hit this summer, and your fun money is running low, you're in luck. Half of this week's events are FREE!

BalletX

The Vail Dance Festival is coming to Breckenridge on Thursday, August 10, for an extraordinary evening of dance from the BalletX accompanied by members from the Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestra. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Riverwalk Center. Tickets are available online.

Breckenridge International Festival of Arts

The 10-day festival, from August 10-20  takes over Breckenridge for a celebration of creativity, play and adventure. The multi-art festival includes performances, exhibits, screenings, workshops, music, film and visual arts built around environmental and mountain culture themes. Colorado Classic Bike Race

The four-day, four-stage pro cycling race will cover 313 miles and gain more than 20,000 vertical feet. The inaugural event is supposed to be unlike any other race anyone has ever seen. The bike-themed party for fans will kick off in Festival Village on August 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Tiger Dredge Lot, where there will be a biking expo, beer garden, kids’ activities and more. From 8-10 p.m. Itchy-O, a 30-piece marching band, will perform live. For more details and information on the athletes, check out the website.

Breck Epic 

The Breck Epic is a made up of six backcountry mountain biking loops, each between 35 and 50 miles long. Competitors choose three loops to race over the three-day event. With courses running all through Summit County, it will be an epic adventure in your own backyard. Registration closes August 10. For more details and registration fees, visit the website.

Guitar Town

Guitar Town is back at Copper Mountain from August 11-13, starting at 1 p.m. Each day will be packed with jam sessions, guitar and songwriting workshops, kids' music and activities and performances from the world’s best guitarists. The lineup will include artists like Tommy Emmanuel, Doyle Dykes, Zakk Wylde and many more. Make sure to catch the fireworks on Saturday at 9 p.m. The best part? The whole festival is free!

Run the Rockies 

Take on a 10K or a half marathon with beautiful views of Lake Dillon and the Ten-Mile Range. Run the Rockies Trail Race takes place along the single track and dirt road trails on the Frisco Peninsula. The race kicks of at 8 a.m. and will start and finish at the Frisco Day Lodge. Register here

Silverthorne's 50th Anniversary Celebration

Silverthorne is turning 50, and they want you to come celebrate. Join the town at 5 p.m. at Rainbow Park on Saturday, August 12. The community will take a group photo and bury a time capsule and there will be cupcakes, street performers and entertainment before that night’s Sunset at the Concert. This week’s headliner is Ron Ivory and the One on One.

Tacos and Tequila

This Saturday, August 12, head up to A-Basin for Tacos and Tequila with live music from Todd Tijerina. The tequila tasting will include delicious sips from Dulce Vida, Altos, Avion, Espolon and Tres Agaves. Grab a bite from the new taco truck to compliment your tequila before dancing the day away. Need a breather? Catch a free scenic ride on the Black Mountain Express to see the mountains. Tickets are $20 ahead of time and $25 the day of.

Kids’ Sandcastle Competition

This Saturday, August 12, at 10 a.m., enter the seventh annual Frisco Bay Marina Kids’ Sand Castle Competition. Kids will have an hour and half to make their best sandcastle. Summit County avalanche rescue dogs will be there helping the judges to pick out the most impressive creations. Awards will be given for four different age groups. Teams will be provided a bucket and shovel but are invited to bring their own building supplies and decoration materials. Register your team online.

Main Street to the Rockies Art Festival

This weekend, come to Frisco to browse art from more than 80 of the nation’s best artists. The Annual Main Street to the Rockies Art Festival is here from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, featuring original art of all kinds. Guests can view mixed media, paintings, photography, jewelry, ceramics and more while strolling the festival.

Frontier Day at River Run

Frontier Day at River Run is a full day of free wild West activities from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hop on a mechanical bull, take an old Western photo and try your hand at calf roping. Enjoy face painting, balloon artists, pony rides and street performers. Then from 1-2 p.m. follow line dancing instructions and show off your new moves with the live DJ.
